Beaches Events

On Saturday, May 2nd 2009 Save the Harbor/Save the Bay awarded 13 Massachusetts non-profit organizations in 9 beach communities with funds to support events on the metropolitan region’s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket.

Below is a list of events and organizations we are supporting in 2009.

In Lynn and Nahant:

  • Thursday evenings from July 9 to August 7, with opening concert on July 3: Friends of Lynn and Nahant State Beaches: Red Rock Summer Concert Series    

The Summer Concerts Series is performed in open space at Red Rock Park overlooking Lynn Beach. The first concert will be on July 3 followed by a grand fireworks show with thousands of attendees, with seven more concerts every Thursday evenings in July and August.

  • July 19 and October 3: Friends of Lynn Heritage State Park: Lynn Heritage State Park Concert Series     

This new Concert Series will bring three new concerts to the waterfront of the Lynn Heritage State Park, attracting residents and local youth groups and camps to discover the recreational value of the Park and the Harbor.


In Revere:

  • July 16 - 18: Revere Beach Partnership: New England Sand Sculpting Festival

The New England Sand Sculpting Festival (NESF) is held annually at Revere Beach and has garnered both national and international media attention over the last four years.


In Winthrop:

  • July 11, August 6, August 27, August 28 and 29: Winthrop Collaborative: Expanded Summer Activities

The Winthrop Collaborative’s member organizations will be hosting several events on Winthrop’s beaches including an Artists at the Beach day on July 11, a Harbor Islands-focused treasure hunt on August 27, as well as a youth Beach Volleyball Tournament and Clinic on August 28 and 29, and a family-oriented interactive Puppet Show on August 6.


In East Boston:

  • September 21: Friends of Belle Isle Marsh: Birds on the Beach

As part of a Monday Night Forum, DCR’s coastal ecologist will lead an education event for the general public to discuss recent developments for local shorebirds, including the appearance of a new species on Revere Beach.

  • June 17 and August 22: East Boston YMCA: Season Opener “Beach Kick-off Day” and Late Season “Beach Dance”

The East Boston YMCA will hold a beach party kick-off day on Constitution Beach on June 17, a public school holiday. The event will feature face painting, sand castle contests, sports, games, arts and crafts, music, and an opportunity for community members to meet with organizations that will be offering programs on Constitution Beach during the summer. The grant award will also support the East Boston YMCA’s late season beach dance, which will include a DJ and beach activities for local youth in August.


In South Boston

  • July 9 & August 6: South Boston Neighborhood House: Early Books Family Night on the Beach

This year’s Early Books on the Beach events will expand on the successful launch of the program last summer at the McCormack Bathhouse on Carson Beach, including storytelling, free books for each child, face painting, sandcastle building as well as other literacy-based activities for several hundred attendees.



In Dorchester:

  • June 23 and August 28: Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester: Family Fun Nights on Malibu Beach

The Clubs will host two Family Fun Nights this summer on Malibu Beach with a cookout, sandcastle building, free t-shirts and other games. The event will serve to build community awareness of the Boys and Girls Club and their community partners while providing a fun neighborhood atmosphere on the beach.

  • August 8: Friends of Savin Hill Shores and Columbia Savin Hill Civic Association: Dorchester Beach Festival

The Dorchester Beach Festival is a one-day outdoor festival open to all at the Savin Hill/Malibu Beach designed to celebrate and promote one of Dorchester’s natural gems with a wide range of activities while also providing environmental, conservation and health information to the community.

  • July 16, July 25, August 30: Tenean Beach Association: Tenean Beach Day and more

This year’s Tenean Beach Day will build on last year’s neighborhood event by advertising to a wider audience and providing entertainment, refreshments, and water races, as well as marine education activities for children at the beach. The Tenean Beach Association will also be holding a beach clean-up on July 16 and a reading event on August 30.


In Quincy:

  •  July 28, August 16, August 18, September 1: Friends of Wollaston Beach: Arts on the Shore and Tot Lot

The Arts on the Shore event on August 16 (rescheduled from June 20!) intends to build on last year’s success, and will feature a chalk festival, music, amateur sand castles, and arts-related vendors. The Friends of Wollaston Beach are also launching a new series of weeknight children’s events at the Tot Lot on Wollaston Beach, starting on July 28 and designed to bring families down to the beach with activities like readings, puppet shows, or music nights.  


In Hull:

  • September 13: Hull Nantasket Chamber of Commerce: Endless Summer Waterfront Festival

The Endless Summer Waterfront Festival on Nantasket Beach and Nantasket Avenue in September clearly demonstrates that the Nantasket beach season does not end on Labor Day. This daylong celebration features live music on two stages, marching bands, dance groups, a sandcastle competition and children’s sidewalk chalk-art.
