Better Beaches 2009
2009 was a great year for beachgoers as Save the Harbor / Save the Bay and our Better Beaches program partners hosted free events and activities that attracted hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors to our region's public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket.
Despite the wet weather, and the tough economic climate, we are proud to report that thanks to the generosity of our corporate and philanthropic partners, this year we were able to supported 13 different communit groups that collectively hosted 31 differentprograms and events on 9 public beaches.

This season's activities included concerts, kite festivals, sandcastle competitions, beachside art shows, swimming lessons, family fun nights, early reading programs and neighborhood beach parties. We are also pleased to note that this year's events attracted larger crowds and more press attention than ever before, as folks looked for great recreational opportunities closer to home.
"These modest investments in programming leverage the billions of dollars we have invested in the Boston Harbor Clean-up and put the Harbor to work for all of us," said Patricia Foley, President of Savethe Harbor / Save the Bay. "We are proud to partner with beach organizations and “Friends” groups that devote so much time on behalf of their local beaches."
The summer got off to a strong start in June, as the East Boston YMCA hosted a Beach Party to kick off the summer on Constitution Beach. The first annual Community Beach Party attracted hundreds of participants, and featured face painting, sand castle contests, sports, games, arts and crafts, music. It also provided East Boston resdents with a great opportunity to meet with organizations offering programs on Constitution Beach during the summer.
Over the course of the summer Friends groups in Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy and Hull all got into the act, as they worked to bring new activity and new people to their beaches.
