This event offers a unique opportunity, unlike any other in metro Boston, to witness and increase awareness of the African-rooted traditions of the nine historically Black Greek Lettered Organizations (BGLOs)—the fraternities and sororities whose signature calls, steps, and strolls carry deep ancestral lineage. Open to the public, the gathering will showcase call-and-response traditions originating in Africa, where calls once communicated location across great distances, sustained enslaved communities in the Americas, and now serve as an integral—though sometimes unofficially debated—part of the Black fraternal experience.
Attendees will also witness stepping: the syncopated, percussive rhythms born from precise, stylized body movements shaped by Black experiences from Congo children's games to South African gum-boot dancers.
Organized by our Better Beaches partners at Greater Boston National Pan-Hellenic Council.
