Back by popular request, BOMBAntillana’s Bomba By The Sea returns to celebrate the connection between humanity, the ocean, and our ancestors through Bomba—a folkloric music and dance form created about 400 years ago by African and Taíno people enslaved on the island of Borikén (Puerto Rico). Bomba was created as a tool for creative expression, healing, resistance, and organizing secret escapes from sugar plantations.
At Bomba By The Sea, attendees will experience a live performance featuring Bomba dancers, singers, and percussionists. They’ll learn about Bomba’s history and significance, engage in call-and-response songs, and try basic Bomba movements. Attendees will engage with a non-religious altar honoring our ancestors and the ocean, and create visual art reflecting the event’s theme.
Organized by our Better Beaches partner Eli Pabon.
