Nourishing Black Minds & Bodies On the Beach

  • Winthrop Beach Winthrop, MA, 02152 United States (map)

Join us for a cultural celebration as well as an environmental science and Black history and present learning opportunity. There will be three rotating sessions for participants that are groups of 10 people each; the first session will be learning to fish both as a tangible skill to empower Black girls/women/gender-expansive people to know and as a meditative process to connect or reconnect with the ocean as a source of nourishment. All fish caught will be returned. This experience will be facilitated by some Black fisher partners who will also teach participants about fish anatomy, marine biology, and share their experiences as Black fisherpeople. The second session occurring simultaneously will be a group doing a tidal pool exploration and learning from a Black professional in marine biology and oceanography about this ecosystem and its importance. The third session will be a group doing a shore walk of the beach with a facilitator that talks about Black history in Winthrop and stories related to the ocean from the African diaspora. Winthrop is the first place it is documented that enslaved Africans arrived to the MA colony. It would be powerful to learn further about this history and reclaim our connection to the water as one focused on learning, celebration, and joy through this event. At the end of this event and once each group rotates to try each activity, we will close all together with time for group reflection and learnings and guided meditation focused on restorative breath and healing from racial trauma led by a community practitioner.

Organized by Better Beaches partner Black Girl Environmentalist (the Boston HUB).
