Bodies of Water, Bodies of Memory

  • Carson Beach Boston, MA United States (map)

Bodies of Water, Bodies of Memory is a free, bilingual, intergenerational community dance and storytelling series at Carson Beach. Rooted in Danza Orgánica’s socially engaged creative practice and its Dance for Social Justice™ framework, the series invites community members of all ages and abilities to experience the beach as a space of belonging, cultural memory, and collective joy.

Movement activities are inspired by the rhythms of the ocean, everyday gesture, and participants’ personal and ancestral stories of migration, displacement, resilience, and connection to place. Creation begins in the first gathering and continues to develop each month, culminating in a final community movement presentation on the beach during the third gathering.

Live bomba drumming and song serve as the musical foundation of the work, supporting both the movement explorations and final public sharing. Bomba, an Afro–Puerto Rican tradition rooted in collective memory and communal dialogue, provides both entertainment and cultural grounding.

Together, the series transforms Carson Beach into a living cultural space of creativity, healing, and shared community life.

Organized by our Better Beaches partners at Danza Organica.
